Lip Mask vs Lip Balm

The basic, surface level difference is that a lip mask repairs the lips, while a lip balm protects the lips. You can think of it as the difference between a face cream and a moisturizer. Lip masks are usually applied at night and lip balms are used during the day. However, if you want to use a lip mask as a lip balm, I won’t tell!

How To Use A Lip Mask

  1. Prep the lips for repair through gentle exfoliation. You can make your own sugar scrub, purchase a lip scrub, or even use a washcloth to remove dead skin from the lips. Apply scrub, gently working in circles for 30 seconds. Rinse and pat dry. Check out my favorite lip scrubs here!
  2. Apply the lip mask. You can leave the lip mask on for 15 min or wear it overnight for maximum reparative benefits.
  3. Apply lip balm. After your lips have been restored to their former glory, it’s a good idea to swipe on a protective layer of lip balm.

Why Your Lips Are Still Dry

  • Sun damage – lack of sun protection.
  • Mouth breathing – breathing through the mouth at night.
  • Dehydration – lack of water.
  • Lip licking – disrupts skin barrier and can cause inflammation.
  • Weather conditions – cold air, dry air, wind, low humidity.
  • Drying ingredients – alcohol, menthol, artificial flavors, fragrance.
  • Chronic health condition – autoimmune conditions, thyroid condition, nutrient deficiencies, eczema, lichen planus.
  • Medications – antihistamines, blood pressure medications, chemotherapy and other medications.

Best Natural and Clean Lip Masks

Frequently Asked Questions

Do lip masks actually work?

Lip masks are as effective as the ingredients in them. This is why it’s important to use a lip mask that contains clean ingredients. Lip masks are designed to hydrate the lips and lock in moisture with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and glycerin.

Can I use a lip mask every day?

A lip mask can be used every day especially if it doesn’t contain any irritating ingredients.

What is the best natural ingredient for dry lips?

Beeswax is one of the best natural ingredients for dry lips. It helps retain moisture by serving as a breathable seal over the lips and also a protective layer against the elements.

Are lip masks better than lip balms for dry lips?

If your lips are severely dry and in need of deeper therapy, choose a lip mask. If your lips are in need of a hydration boost but not necessarily intensive care, then a lip balm will do. It’s best to combine forces for maximum benefit. Use a lip balm during the day and a lip mask a couple times during the week at night for deeper repair.
