The Truth About the BA/PO Role

In the world of product ownership and management, the Business Analyst or Product Owner role is often misunderstood, oversimplified, or idealized. But anyone who has lived it knows — while it’s rewarding and deeply transformative, it also has a messy, political, and sometimes frustrating side as well.

The traditional job description for a BA/PO, I feel, is incomplete. It lists documentation, elicitation, and prioritization. It fails to mention political navigation, risk ownership, or the courage required to say “No,” even to the CEO.

After more than six years leading technical digital products, I’ve realized that the greatest lessons come from the failures, the difficult negotiations, and the scars that ultimately lead to success.

This series aims to bring you the real version — not the polished textbook view. That is the entire premise behind this series: The Unfiltered BA/PO: Strategy, Scars, and Success.

What I Will Cover: A Candid and Comprehensive Journey

This series is designed to give you the raw, actionable insights necessary to thrive at the intersection of business and technology. I plan to follow a clear path, covering the whole spectrum of the role:

  • Part I: The Strategic Foundation: I will start with the bedrock — understanding why your BRS is the strategic anchor and how to establish documentation rigor by comparing BRD, BRS, and SRS.
  • Part II: Tactical Survival Skills: I will get hyper-specific on delivery — from mastering Acceptance Criteria and The Art of Asking the Right Questions to understanding the essential transition of From BRS to User Story.
  • Part III: Navigating the Politics: This is where we as BAs/POs earn our scars. I address Stakeholder Management, enforce the vital separation between What vs. How with the development team, and reveal What They Don’t Teach You about the role’s true difficulty.
  • Part IV: Future-Proofing and PO Leadership: I will conclude this series by focusing on leadership and the future. This includes becoming a Data-Driven Strategist and making the strategic jump to Thinking Like a Product Owner.

Are You Ready for the Unfiltered Truth?

Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or just beginning your journey, I hope this series becomes a space where the unspoken truths meet practical wisdom — so you can build smarter, lead better, and grow faster, whilst understanding that being a BA/PO is not just following a checklist or becoming a requirement typist.

New stories and insights will be published weekly (hopefully 😁).

Thanks for being here, and welcome to the journey ahead.
