Sunny Side Egg, Warm Memory in Simplicity | by siwi. | Oct, 2025

As a kid, our mother or father must have made us sunny side egg, especially for breakfast. It was very simple yet pretty delicious dish. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s very nostalgic. Rich kid or middle class one, sunny side egg was something a kid must ever had.
In west cuisine, sunny side egg is often paired with toast and avocado. I personally think it was great meal; the toast was carb source, the avocado was the vitamin and fat, and the sunny side egg was the main protein. It was festive and abundant in nutrition.
For me, since I’m Indonesian, I’ve had my sunny side egg differently. As someone whose mother was very busy, I often had sunny side egg as my main dish as a kid. I’d eat it with rice. Its savoriness mixed with warm rice made a perfect combo which both delicious and filling. It’s also common to add sweet soy sauce on top of the egg to enhance flavor.
Sunny Side Egg and Favorite Drama Series
My favorite was always using two eggs. The trick for perfect sunny side egg was frying them in cold oil. You can use any oil of your choice but it has to be cold when you crack the eggs into the pan. Then, you can start the fire in low heat, and just let the eggs being cooked slowly. Voila, you’d get soft and appealing sunny side egg.
Sunny side egg may appear as very simple, small, low effort meal. But it was actually a luxury for some people. One of the thing that reminded me of sunny side egg was 2016 Korean Drama Series, Reply 1988. The main character, Duk-seon, had a love for sunny side egg. However, her family was in difficult situation to the point they couldn’t even provide fancy meals and eat the same dish almost everyday. One morning, her sister Bo-ra and brother No-eul asked their mother for fried egg, but there were only two eggs. Duk-seon understood their situation and yield for her siblings.
Through sunny side egg and Reply 1988, I once learned gratefulness. Things you see as small and ordinary, even easy to get, could be very special and has deep meaning for others.
Overtime, I started cooking for myself, and one of the dishes I made at the beginning of my cooking journey was sunny side egg. I still had it with rice even when I’m all grown up. Sunny side egg was not just a simple dish. It represents nostalgic and warmth in simplicity.
