My Natural Haircare Routine – Gurl Gone Green

Taking care of your hair goes far beyond just using the right shampoo and conditioner. It’s about nourishing your strands, caring for your scalp, and being mindful of what you are using. For me, it all starts with a consistent hair care routine that avoids the harsh chemicals so often found in conventional products.
And today I’m sharing my natural hair care routine—a routine I’ve perfected over the years since switching over to a greener lifestyle. Thankfully, the products available in the clean beauty space for hair have just gotten better and better with time, making it so much easier to find products that will work for your hair type.
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your routine, this post will walk you through the steps, ingredients, and products to help your hair feel its best.

What Is A Natural Haircare Routine
A natural haircare routine is all about using clean, non-toxic ingredients to cleanse, nourish, and style your hair. It prioritizes toxin free products and will avoid synthetic fragrances, sulfates, silicones, parabens, and drying alcohols.
When building your own natural hair regimen, here are a few things to consider:
- Your hair type – From curly, fine, thick, or color-treated your hair will respond differently to products and ingredients depending on your hair type.
- Scalp health – When you have a healthy scalp you will have healthier hair. Focus on nourishing the skin beneath your hair too.
- Frequency Of Wash Day – You don’t need to wash your hair daily. Find what works best for your hair, but every couple days is a great starting point.
- Detangling – Always detangle your hair gently using a wide tooth comb or your fingers to prevent breakage. You can add in a spray in conditioner if you need a little extra help getting through the tangles.
Just like a skincare routine, the key is consistency in the care of your hair. The more regular your hair care routine, the more your hair will respond, balance oil production, and gain strength and shine.

How To Do A Natural Hair Care Routine
If you don’t know where to start, here’s a step-by-step breakdown of what I do and recommend for others in their hair care routine.
Step 1: Cleanse
Your shampoo sets the tone for your entire routine. A good shampoo should clean the scalp without stripping it. I use the Evolvh Ultrashine Moisture Shampoo (code gurlgonegreen15 to save 15%)—it’s one of the few natural shampoos that actually gets my fine hair clean without leaving buildup or weighing it down. Pair it with the matching conditioner, and you’ve got a solid start to your routine.
Tip: Focus shampoo on the scalp and conditioner on the ends.
Step 2: Deep Clean Weekly
A weekly detox mask is essential, especially for those of us using styling products. I love the Innersense Detox Hair Mask—it clears out buildup without weighing hair down.

Step 3: Detangle + Protect
While your hair is still damp I apply a heat protectant spray- I love using Flourish Honeyblossom + Marshmallow Root UV + Heat Protectant Spray (use code gurlgonegreen to save 15%). I use a wide tooth comb to detangle my hair after spraying. Start at the ends and work your way up to avoid breakage.
Step 4: Add Volume on Damp Hair
Before blow drying, I apply either Evolvh Better Roots Growth Support Styling Foam (code gurlgonegreen15 to save 15%) or Innersense I Create Lift Volumizing Foam from roots to midshaft. Both are amazing for fine hair—giving lift without stickiness. Then I blow dry my hair upside down using my Eco Tools Blow Drying Brush to maximize volume.
Step 5: Style & Define
Once dry, I use a 3/4 inch curling iron to add soft curls, then smooth and define with Innersense Whipped Creme Texturizer. It adds light hold and shine without dragging my hair down.
Step 6: Add Texture
For effortless waves or to break up curls, I spritz on Innersense I Create Waves Texture Spray. It gives that “just-back-from-the-beach” look—great for curly hair too.

Step 7: Lock It In
Finish with a few spritzes of Josh Rosebrook Hairspray (use code SUZI10 to save 10% off). It’s non-aerosol, smells divine, and gives light hold without crunch.
Step 8: Refresh Between Washes
Dry shampoo is a must-have. I use Primally Pure Dry Shampoo (use code GURLGONEGREEN10 to save 10%) Note: I go with the light hair formula. It soaks up excess oil, adds lift at the roots, and smells amazing thanks to essential oils. Perfect between wash days.

What Natural Ingredients Are Good For Your Hair

- Jojoba Oil
- Olive Oil

What Are The Best Natural Hair Products
These are the natural hair products I go back to again and again. They are my tried and true products — and I’ve tested A LOT over the years.

Flourish Honeyblossom + Marshmallow Root UV + Heat Protectant Spray
I love spraying this on my hair before blow drying for added heat protection. It doesn’t weigh it down at all. Also, great for protecting hair from sun exposure. Get it here and use code gurlgonegreen to save 15% off.

Innersense Whipped Creme Texturizer
Perfect after curling. Adds polish, softness, and slight hold while letting waves shine. Everyone in my family uses this one! Get it here!

Innersense I Create Waves Texture Spray
Gives that undone, tousled look. A must-have in the summer for added texture. Get it here!

Innersense Detox Hair Mask
I use this mask weekly to detoxify and remove buildup. While I love it for my thin and fine hair, it also works for thick hair. Use before shampooing your hair and leave in for 3-5 minutes. Get it here.

Whether you’re starting your natural hair regimen or fine-tuning it for your hair type, remember that consistency is key. Pay attention to how your hair feels after each step and tweak as needed.
As someone with fine, thin hair, I’ve learned that volume is possible—without weighing hair down or compromising on clean ingredients. With the right routine, clean products, and a few of my favorite tools (like my favorite teasing brush and curling iron), you can achieve healthy hair that looks and feels amazing.
Not sure where to start. Usually one or two swaps goes the furthest—like a new shampoo or styling foam—and build your routine from there. Like anything else, it doesn’t have to be all at once. And, by changing up just one or two things at a time, it will allow you to know what is really working for you.
