My Journey Into Technology: From Childhood Curiosity to My IT Career | by Emamarialdomk | Sep, 2025
From as far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated by technology. As a child, I would often open up toys, radios, and other simple devices just to see what was inside. Most times, I didn’t manage to fix them again, but every failed attempt left me with a stronger curiosity. I wanted to know why and how things worked. That curiosity planted the seed of my lifelong passion for technology.
As I grew older, computers became my biggest interest. I remember the excitement of learning how to use basic applications, experimenting with simple coding, and spending hours trying to understand networks and how information flows. To me, technology was not just a tool for entertainment — it was a window to the future.
That passion eventually shaped my decision to pursue a career in Information Technology. Today, I am studying IT at Uganda Christian University, and every step of my journey connects back to that childhood curiosity. My coursework and projects — from working on network setups, databases, and mobile applications, to exploring AI-powered voting systems — have all strengthened my skills and helped me see how technology can solve real-world problems.
During my internship at UIRI, I worked on a project called the Smart Obstacle Detection, Alert and Avoidance System, inspired by drone behavior. It combined sensors, microcontrollers, and programming to detect obstacles and alert users in time. That project reminded me of the same excitement I felt as a child opening up gadgets, but this time, I was not just exploring — I was creating.
Now, my career vision is clear. I want to build solutions that make life easier, safer, and more connected. Whether it is through networks, smart systems, or secure applications, I see myself contributing to the future of technology in Uganda and beyond.
Looking back, I realize that my journey into IT was never accidental. It started with curiosity, grew into passion, and today, it has become a career path that I am proud to pursue. And as technology keeps evolving, I am determined to keep learning, innovating, and creating solutions that truly make an impact.
