I used to think that when someone said “I don’t want to fight,” they meant they wanted peace.

But then I realized what it really meant: “I don’t want to deal with how you’re feeling.”

Every time I opened up to him — not to yell, not to argue — just to explain how I felt, he shut down. I cried in front of him, my words heavy with pain, my voice shaking with fear, and all he said was, “I don’t want to fight.”

And just like that… I was left talking to silence.

He didn’t comfort me.

He didn’t apologize.

He didn’t even try to understand.

Instead, he acted like nothing happened the next morning. Every single time.

That’s the part that hurt the most — not the argument, but the pretending. The way he moved on while I was still stuck in last night’s heartbreak.

I wasn’t asking for flowers or perfect words. I was just asking for space to be heard. To be seen.

But instead, I became “too much,” “too emotional,” “too sensitive.”

And that’s how emotional neglect feels — like screaming underwater. You’re drowning, and the one person who’s supposed to save you pretends not to hear your cries.

I started questioning myself:

Was I overreacting?

Was I the problem?

Was I asking for too much just to be understood?

But the truth is, love that ignores your pain isn’t love at all.

Love doesn’t fear hard conversations.

Love leans in — even when it’s uncomfortable.

So, I stopped begging him to listen.

I stopped sending long messages he wouldn’t read.

I stopped fighting to matter.

Because the moment I chose my peace over his silence, I finally heard something I had been missing all along — my own voice.
