Faith, Leadership, and Coming Home: My Journey Back to My First Love | by Montravias King | Jul, 2025

I come from a lineage of Pastors, Bishops, and Ministers. Growing up, I was surrounded by people who lived out their faith every day, so knowing about God was never the question. But truly knowing God for myself — that came later, in a small storefront church in rural eastern North Carolina.

That place was Powerhouse Church of God in Statonburg, NC, and it’s where my personal faith journey began. Powerhouse wasn’t some grand cathedral — it was humble, close-knit, and powerful in spirit. It was there that I first found community and purpose. I became heavily involved in Youth Ministries, helping lead services, organizing events, and supporting my peers as we all tried to figure out what it meant to live a life of faith.

Then, on April 2, 2006, something happened that would change the trajectory of my life: I was ordained as a Minister by Apostle Dorothy Davis. I was still young, but I felt called to serve. From that point forward, I preached in rural churches across eastern North Carolina, standing in pulpits that felt both sacred and familiar.

But ministry did more than teach me how to preach. It taught me how to lead.

As my faith grew, so did my commitment to community leadership. I started running for Student Government Association positions in school, learning the ropes of organizing, advocating, and listening. By my senior year, I was both the SGA President and the JROTC Battalion Commander — roles that taught me the importance of discipline, vision, and service.

Of course, life isn’t always smooth. My faith has been tested — by tragedy, by disappointment, and by heartbreak. There have been moments when I veered away from my faith, questioning my path or feeling disconnected from the calling I once held so close. But no matter how far I strayed, I always found my way back.

Because at the end of the day, I know where my strength comes from. My faith isn’t just part of my identity — it is my identity. It reminds me that leadership isn’t about ego or ambition; it’s about service, humility, and love. It’s about community, accountability, and making the world better — not just for yourself, but for the people who look to you for guidance.

Today, I’m proud to call St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte my spiritual home, where I’m under the care and dynamic leadership of Rev. Clifford Matthews Jr. His guidance continues to shape my faith and leadership journey.
