A Warm Welcome on a Cold Winter Night: Welcoming the New Consul General of Indonesia in Perth | by Hening Suryandari | Aug, 2025

Even in the heart of a Perth winter, when the wind cuts just a little sharper and the sky dims earlier than we wish, warmth finds its way – especially when Indonesians gather. Last night, August 7, 2025, was a true testament to that spirit, as the Indonesian community in Perth came together to officially welcome the new Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia and his family to their latest post in Western Australia.
The evening air was brisk, with temperatures hovering in the single digits and a lingering chill in the breeze. But at the Indonesian Consulate, warmth radiated from every corner – through smiles, laughter, and a shared sense of community. As guests arrived, excitement and heartfelt conversations filled the atmosphere. Friends reunited, acquaintances caught up, and people forged new connections under the consulate’s welcoming lights.
The event began on time, a rarity for any gathering, yet a testament to the well-organised and thoughtful planning behind the evening. The Master of Ceremonies opened with a vibrant energy that lifted the crowd’s spirit immediately. True to Indonesian tradition, the MC began with a pantun – a poetic quatrain often used in ceremonies to entertain or open conversations with wit and charm.
A pantun is a traditional Malay poetry form commonly used in Indonesia to open speeches or lighten an event. It’s rhythmic, rhymed, and usually playful. The MC’s delivery was met with laughter and cheer from the audience, especially as both hosts exchanged pantun back and forth, adding a layer of joy and familiarity that instantly warmed the room.
Everyone had been waiting for the new Consul General to take the stage. He introduced himself and his lovely family with humility and grace – his wife, Ibu Dora, and their daughter, who accompanied him to Perth. He also shared a heartfelt note about their first-born son, who is still completing his studies and will join the family in Perth after his upcoming graduation. The Consul General also introduced two dedicated staff members from Wisma Indonesia, his official residence, who will assist him in his new role.
The Indonesian community responded with great enthusiasm. This event was more than a formal occasion – a heartfelt welcome from a diasporic family embracing one of their own.
A special session followed, during which representatives from various Indonesian community organisations in Perth introduced themselves. Witnessing the diversity and richness of cultures from across the archipelago was incredible. From Jogjakarta to North Sulawesi, Batak communities to the Kawanua, Central and East Java to West Java, representing almost every region from Sabang to Merauke. The vibrant fabric of Indonesia was fully present in this corner of Australia.
Not only were cultural organisations present, but the student community also took part in the introductions. Representatives from Murdoch University, the University of Western Australia, Curtin University, postgraduate associations, and PhD students proudly shared their presence and aspirations. Their youthful energy added even more vibrance to the evening.
What stood out most was the warmth. The atmosphere remained casual, joyous, and uniquely Indonesian despite the formalities. My husband, attending an event like this for the first time, leaned in and whispered, “Everyone seems genuinely happy here. It feels like family.” And he was right. That spirit of togetherness – the easy smiles, spontaneous laughter, and open-hearted greetings – is uniquely Indonesian and transcends geography.
As every great Indonesian gathering does, the evening concluded with delicious food. Authentic Indonesian dishes were shared, enjoyed, and savoured. We took the opportunity to have a quick photo with the Consul General, shared a few words of thanks, and wished him all the best in his new journey.
Our hearts were warm and full as we stepped back into the cold Perth night. Hope, joy, and a sense of optimism were in the air. The Indonesian community in Perth is ready to collaborate, support, and walk alongside the Consul General in his new chapter here.
Here’s to new beginnings, meaningful connections, and the enduring warmth of community – no matter the season.
