Right after my graduation, I went for a job interview at a call center. As soon as I opened the office door, I saw a young man dressed in black. My eyes fell on him for the very first time, and strangely, my heart seemed to pause. It was an unfamiliar feeling, yet so strong that I could not ignore it.

I walked past him and entered the interview room with my friend. After the interview, I came out and sat on the chair right in front of him. He kept looking at me quietly, and I could feel his eyes following me. Something unspoken was already in the air.

The next day our training started. For three days, every time I tried to focus on my work, I found him looking at me. Slowly, he tried to come closer—small gestures, soft smiles, and attempts to talk. My heart began to believe that this silent connection might be something real.

But then, everything changed. One day, without any reason, he started ignoring me. The same person who once came near was now distancing himself. It hurt me deeply, and I could not understand why. Finally, I asked him. His answer was short:
“What will Sir Shoaib think? He is my cousin and also the CEO here. I don’t want him to misunderstand our relationship.”

Those words broke me. He still dropped me off at my hostel sometimes, but the closeness was gone. I worked there for a month, but his silence and distance were unbearable. Eventually, I left the job. But leaving the office did not mean leaving him. He stayed in my thoughts, in my heart.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, but his image never left me. I tried to reach him through calls and messages, but he mostly ignored me. One day, one of his friends told me, “We’re going to Zohaib’s wedding.” My whole body froze. It felt like my soul had left me. In tears, I called him. He replied, “That’s not true. My friend was joking. How can marriage be possible without you?”

His words gave me hope again. I thought maybe he loved me but was silent because of family pressure. My heart was confused—if he loved me, why was he ignoring me? If he didn’t, then why give me hope?

Then came the final truth. One day, he said:
“Yes, you like me. But I don’t want to break your heart. That’s why I must stay away.”

And with that, he walked away.

Even today, I ask myself the same question: Did he really love me, or was it just an unfinished story?
