A Day Without Mobile Data. One day without mobile data taught me… | by Kanimozhi Thangamani | Sep, 2025

One day without mobile data taught me that distraction isn’t just online.
One morning, I woke up to find myself completely cut off from the internet. No mobile data, no Wi-Fi. At first, I decided to do something useful like reading a book that I bought months ago but that remained untouched. Completing my writing under a new topic is also on my radar.
Likewise, my to-do list continued to include arranging my cupboard, cleaning my messy room, changing the water for my money plant, etc., etc. First , I started with the intention of completing my new blog and searched for the file. However, since I saved my file in the cloud, I can’t retrieve it without the internet, which ended the night before. Forcing myself to do anything productive is a rare occasion ; due to the lack of mobile data, it turns into a dead end.
Afterwards, I shifted gears. I decided to read while listening to music. Rather than using apps to listen to music, I always download my favorite songs, which I saved on my mobile. While the music played through my AirPods, I browsed through the e- book collection I saved in my folder. Though I have books at home, I didn’t bring any along since I am visiting my aunt.
As I scrolled down my e-book shelf, I found many self-help books, but I ended up choosing a romance novel. Though I have read it many times, I dove into it as if I were reading a new book. After a few chapters, my attention drifted again.
That’s when I remembered something funny—many of us use our mobiles late at night not out of addiction, but simply to finish the day’s leftover data. I’ve done that countless times, downloading movies or series just so my data doesn’t “go to waste.” And because of that habit, I already had a few movies stored on my phone.
That day , I chose to watch an English crime thriller . For the first time in years, I watched an English movie that was released nearly two decades ago. It was refreshing and interesting to see all my favorite heroes in one movie that made my day; Just like that, the day slipped away.
Waking up with the intention of doing something useful, I ended up doing nothing productive . However, the movie was worth it. Still, my to-do list remains in my memory, and I did nothing from it.
I learned something, though : that being without mobile data doesn’t mean my day turns productive . Having my mobile in my hand is itself a distraction. Because, as if foreseeing this day, I have many things like movies and series on my mobile to keep me entertained.
The only time I truly create something new is when my phone isn’t with me—like this piece, which I’m writing while it’s charging.
